A PRELIMINARY SURVEY OF OCULAR CHANGES INDUCED BY ANTIPSYCHOTIC DRUGS

Abstract
|
|
|
The authors attempted to evaluate the mode and degree of ocular side effects of some antipsychotic drugs. Seventy schizophrenics who had been placed on one or more antipsychotic drugs (chlorpromazine, perphenazine, trifluoperazine) were randomly selected and were subjected to a series of ophthalm logical examinations. Fifty four subjects who had not been treated with any antipsychotic drug were selected for a control group and the same examinations were performed.
The results were as follows.
1. Overall rates of ocular changes were 72.8°5
in the medicated group and 18.5% in control group. (P<0.001)
2. Visual acuity was disturbed in 45.7% of the medicated group and in 20.3% of control group. (0.001< P <0.01)
3. Accommodation was impaired in 25.7% of the medicated group and in 9.2% of control group.
(0.01< P <0.05)
4. Opacity and/or pigmentation in the eyeball were found in 45.7% of the medicated group and in 7.4% of control group. (P<0.001)
5. Retinal pigmentation was found in 20% and conjunctival pigmentation in 12.8% of medicated group. Lens opacity was noticed in 15.7% and corntxl opacity in 8.5% in medicated group. None of the medicated and control group showed pigmentation in iris, sclera and vitreous body.
6. Occular pressure was within normal limit in all subjects of both the medicated and control group.
